Black Hills Fishing Report April 1st 2015

Wow! It has been a warm spring. Fishing season is picking up and it's getting better by the day. Hopefully there will be moisture in the forecast, but we will worry about that later. In the meantime, get outside and enjoy the nice weather and catch some fish. We've been concentrating mostly on Rapid Creek the past couple of weeks. Dry fly fishing has been decent as hatches of blue winged olive mayflies (Baetis, BWOs) have picked up. Midges are hatching too. A few little black stoneflies are hatching as well. Fish can be had just about every day on dries. To find risers look for the soft edges and fish tight to the bank. This is especially true in town where flows have picked up. When targeting fish with nymphs get down and get down quick. Fish any seams against the banks and also at the top end of runs. Fishing in the biggest pools has been okay. In town the fish are in the shallow water. Will be hitting Castle Creek in Spearfish Creek later this week and will post a new report including other streams by the weekend. Thanks to Stuart Neville and his Dad Rick for a great day on the water this past Tuesday. Stuart is a guide for Hayward Fly Fishing in Hayward Wisconsin. If you want a change-up from the trout routine, try chasing Smallmouth and Muskies with Stuart in Wisconsin.
